The Norse Gods are the pantheon deities of the peoples of Northern Europe, living in Asgard and Vanaheim (the 2 out of 9-10 realms where the Norse Gods live). They are one of the most powerful races to inhabit the Nine Realms and are viewed as protectors of Midgard and mankind. Despite being of the same race, the Norse Gods are divided into 2 tribes; the strong and warlike Aesir (AKA Asgardians in Marvel Comics) and the magical and nature-loving Vanir.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

In addition to being immortal, the Gods are supernatural beings. It's assumed that most of the Norse Gods share many if not all the abilities of the Greek Gods have such as:

  • Norse Deity Physiology
    • Godly Condition
      • Supernatural Body
        • Superhuman Strength: All Asgardians are superhumanly strong with the average Asgardian male God able to lift (press) about 30 tons under optimal conditions and the average Asgardian Goddess able to lift (press) about 25 tons under optimal conditions.
        • Superhuman Durability: The bodies of the Asgardian Gods are considerably more resistant to physical injury than the bodies of human beings. Asgardian Gods are capable of withstanding conventional injury including great impact forces, exposure to temperature and pressure extremes and falls from great heights without sustaining physical injury.
        • Superhuman Speed: All Asgardians have the potential of being able to run and move at speeds much greater than the finest human athlete. Only Hermod and a few others can supersede the majority of the Asgardian Gods.
        • Superhuman Agility
        • Superhuman Stamina: The musculature of the Asgardian Gods produce considerably fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity than the muscles of human beings. An average Asgardian God can exert themselves at peak capacity for about 24 hours before fatigue impairs them. Odin, Thor, and Tyr are physically stronger than most of the Asgardian Gods.
        • Superhuman Senses
        • Superhumanly Dense Tissue: The skin, muscle, and bone tissues of the Asgardian Gods are about three times as dense as the same tissue of a human body, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight.
        • Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite their natural durability, it is possible for any of the Asgardian Gods to sustain injury. However, if injured, their highly advanced metabolism enables them to recover with superhuman speed and efficiency. As with most of their other powers, the speed and extent of these powers varies from one Asgardian God to another and is greater for more powerful Asgardians. According to Doom during an Asgardian vivisection, a normal Asgardian can heal from having their heart removed for five minutes after the removal in addition to having his or her neural system continue to function normally.

        • Teleportation
        • Invisibility
        • Intangibility
        • Shapeshifting: The only Norse deities who can shape-shift appear to be Odin, Frigg and Loki, though Freya is able to also do so in the myths via her falcon cloak, and Thor once Disguised himself as a young boy to be on a ship with an ogre to hunt for the Midgard Serpent.
        • Regeneration
        • Telekinesis
        • Telepathy
        • Possession
        • Mental Manipulation
        • Sensory Enhancement
        • Energy Manipulation: The Asgardian Gods have some potential to manipulate mystical or cosmic energies for some purpose. These powers are mostly limited to changing their appearance or shape and teleporting across great distances. However, a small minority of the Asgardian Gods are capable of manipulating vast amounts of energy for a variety of purposes including teleportation, shape-shifting, matter manipulation, augmentation of their physical capabilities, erecting powerful force fields, firing powerful blasts of energy for destructive purposes, and granting superhuman attributes to objects and beings. According to Doctor Doom, every Asgardian has a spark of the Odin Force inside them, giving them their mystical nature.
          • Energy Projection: The ability to project energy
        • Chronokinesis
        • Necrokinesis

    • Superpowered Physiology
    • Superhuman Longevity: The Asgardian Gods are extremely long-lived, but they are not truly immortal like the Olympian Gods. They age at a much slower rate, but they are not immune to the effects of aging. Their bodies are also immune to all known Earthly diseases and infection.
    • Cosmic Entity Physiology
    • Beyond-Dimensional Physiology

Abilities[]

The Asgardian Gods possess specific skills associated with their personalities or area of expertise. For example, as the Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor has complete control and mastery of the weather, whereas Amora is highly skilled in all forms of physical and sexual pleasure. Most of the Asgardian Gods have had some degree of training in armed and unarmed combat through private tutors or through the other Gods.

Weaknesses[]

The Norse gods have eternal youth granted by regular consumption of the Golden Apples of Idunn, with superhuman physical abilities and a variety of magical powers. Because the Norse gods are physical beings (like the Greco-Roman gods and unlike the Egyptian gods), they are able to sire demigod children with mortals and walk the earth without a host.

  • Apple-Induced Eternal Youth : The Norse gods unlike the Greek Gods or Egyptian Gods will rapidly grow old and weaken when they're unable to eat Idunn's apples of eternal youth on a regular basis. This is shown when she was kidnapped by Utgard-Loki on one occasion.
  • Immortality : The Norse gods are extremely difficult to kill (Mimir survived being decapitated, for instance) but they, unlike the Greco-Roman gods, are not completely immortal, as most of them are destined to die during Ragnarok, the Twilight of the Norse gods. Beings or weapons with the power to kill Norse gods include the following:
    • Other gods, since Loki and Heimdall are destined to kill each other.
    • Surter, the Lord of Muspellheim, who is destined to use Sumarbrander to kill Frey .
    • Fenris, the ferocious wolf, who is destined to kill Odin; his two sons, Sköll and Hati, are also about to kill Sól the Sun and Máni the Moon after which Ragnarök would come.
    • Garm, the blood-stained guard dog of Hel, who is destined to kill Tyr.
    • Jormungand, the World Serpent, who is destined to kill Thor (though he will also be slain in the process).
    • Mistletoe that killed the otherwise invulnerable Baldur.
    • Thor's hammer Mjølnir, as he had threatened to kill Loki with it several times.

It can also be noted that most Norse Gods are usually not as powerful as the Olympian Gods with the exceptions from more than a few (including the royal families of Asgard & Vanaheim, such as Baldur, Heimdall, Týr or Freya) but most notably are the king of the Aesir, Odin and his Half-God Half-Giant son, Thor who are believed to be on equal level with that of Zeus. Unlike many of the Olympians or other pantheons, more than a few relatively wield magic; even Ares has been shown using it for various effects.

Technology[]

The Asgardians are among the most advanced societies in the Nine Realms. To many races, their science and technology is beyond comprehension, often thought of as supernatural. Asgardian science and technology are based around magic, a type of energy manipulation.

  • Directed energy weapons:
    • Gungnir
    • Loki's Scepter
    • Mjölnir
  • Melee weapons: The Asgardians possess swords, daggers, knives, arrow heads, spears and axes forged in highly advanced magical smithies from metals denser and stronger than the metals commonly found on Earth, such as Thor's hammer which is made of Uru. They have been shown to glow with some sort of energy along the edge that would logically increases their already potent ability to cut through targets.

    • Brandrheid Undrsig
    • Dragonfang
    • Fimbuldraugr
    • Hofund
    • Hridgandr
    • Loki's Blades
    • Sif's Sword and Shield
  • Armor and shields: Asgardian armor and shields are made out of Asgardian metal, the armor comes in both plate mail and scale mail form, well the shields are usually round but come in other shapes. It is very dense and strong, and has been shown repelling various projectiles of humans and alien races, and energy discharges from several sources. It has been overwhelmed by very sharp strong projectiles fired at high velocities, Jotun ice abilities, Dark Elf rifles and damaged by extended battle. Loki can make his armor seem to disappear so as to appear less threatening and the hammer Mjolnir can create Asgardian armor out of energy.

    • Valkyrie's Armor
    • Winged Helmet
  • Force fields: The Asgardians make use of force field technology to contain prisoners and protect key areas of Asgard.
  • Anti gravity:
  • Bifrost Bridge
    • Wormhole manipulation: The Bifrost Bridge, the means by which the Asgardians travel among the Nine Realms and beyond, is a machine capable of creating wormholes.
  • Flying vessels: Asgardian soldiers also pilot small flying vessels which resemble traditional Viking boats. It is unclear whether their ability to fly is magical or merely technological.
    • Asgardian Skiff
  • Automotons: The Asgardians have some knowledge of artificial intelligence; the Destroyer, once guardian of Odin's vaults, was an empty suit of armor which would accept and carry out commands.
